Meaning of the word ‘chat’ has an inherent sense of ‘talking’ implied in it. Yet when we mean chatting over the net we intend to convey ‘writing’. And when it comes to talking over the net we call it ‘voice chat’, when the word ‘chat’ itself meant the same, though it didn’t express the complete sense in the case of regular ‘chat’, which is written and not oral.

We want small, sharp and meaningful words. Still we don’t complain about using a long or compound word like ‘voice chat’. Then while searching or creating the sanskrit counterparts, the words जल्पनम् and लिखितजल्पनम्/लेख्यजल्पनम् would be appropriate it seems, with regular ‘chat’ being called लिखितजल्पनम्/लेख्यजल्पनम् instead of जल्पनम् having to convey an imposed meaning of writing and the word जल्पनम् being allowed to retain its ‘oral’ flavour by attributing it to voice chat.

In case of confusion, ‘over the net’ can be conveyed by saying जालजल्पनम्. Noting the reversification of meanings that I have done, जालजल्पनम् would essentially mean a voice chat over the net.लेख्यजल्पनम् can of course always convey that it is definitely over the net/mobile.

The remaining follows easily:

chat box: जल्पनकोषः

chat window: जल्पनायनम्

chat room:जल्पनकक्षः

messenger: सन्देशदम् (I prefer it in neutral gender)

Though the words जल्पकः/जल्पिका would have to be avoided, because they mean ‘talkative’. Instead, जल्पनं करोति इति जल्पनकः/जल्पनका would fare better, in my opinion.

All of the above must, of course, undergo the analysis of an expert.
